100 Day Project
all hail the creative constraint | days 00-01
day 00.
First things. I need to give the *warmest* shout-out to illustrator, educator, and brilliant gatherer of folks, Caitlin Metz | IG: caitlinhasfeels. Caitlin is someone whose art and ideas have made homes of my walls and shelves for years. Their Patreon is cozy and communal—and longer story short, it’s through their invitation that I landed here, making a Substack, trying a new creative thing for 100 dang days. When I read their inspiration and guide for a 100 day project this week, it’s like the energy behind the aforementioned practice makes found a friend. So, I went with it. Beaming with thanks, CM.1
my 100 day project - the rules & tools
I will make a 5 minute mixed-media-clay-collage each day
Each collage will reuse the same 1oz of plasticine2 clay
I will incorporate 2 found objects3 gathered during a daily walk
I will save the found objects in a shoebox
I will date and photograph each collage and maybe write a short reflection or title
Each collage will use the same background
At the end of the project, I will create a single collage/sculpture/visual meditation incorporating all collected found objects
I’ll document progress on Substack every 10 days or so, with photo uploads and notes along the way
day 01.
And so it begins!4 My first collage and a project launch. Couldn’t help but think of my 18-month-old pal Silas while on yesterday’s walk and keeping my senses open for tiny treasures. Silas has a penchant for collecting good rocks. Perhaps I’ll find some for him soon.
I’ll report back in 10 days or so with the next installment. If you want to get the early scoop, click below.
For real, the Patreon downloadables are gems. Pre-/Post-therapy processing sheets? Reflection guides? Zines for all the feels? Yesplease. Also, Etsy.
I stumbled across plasticine clay a few years ago. There’s something about working with a medium that never truly dries or hardens that I love and need. Helps me practically hold to creative outcomes more loosely. In this case, whatever is shaped today will literally be transformed tomorrow.
Can’t help but point toward Andy Goldsworthy here.
Immediate takeaway: 5 minutes pass in a blink. Say hello to some new go-with-it muscles.
